After years of secrecy, billions in funding, and hype so thick you could cut it, Magic Leap has shipped the Magic Leap One Creator Edition. For $2,295 you get a pair of goggles, a small puck computer called the Lightpack that clips to your belt, and a controller. The pitch is spatial computing: digital objects that exist in your physical room, anchored to real surfaces.

The reality gap

The technology is impressive in spots. The waveguide optics are genuinely interesting, the spatial mapping is solid, and the anchoring of digital objects to real surfaces works better than I expected. The field of view is small, though, the content library is thin, and $2,295 for a narrow window into a limited software catalog is a tough sell. The early reviews are cautious. So am I. This feels like a brilliant engineering project that has not yet figured out what it is for.

The trend for the year ahead

AR glasses remain a hardware problem that money alone has not solved. Expect Magic Leap to pivot toward enterprise, where the price matters less and use cases are clearer. The consumer version of this idea waits for better, smaller optics. Until then, the promise of AR sits just out of reach.

I wanted to love this. The waveguides are a real innovation. The gap between the pitch and the product is too wide for comfort. Two thousand dollars for what is effectively a narrow window into a few digital objects is a hard case to make. The technology is ahead of its current form factor, which is, in one sentence, the story of AR.
