2023 is XR’s biggest year since the original Quest. Apple revealed Vision Pro at WWDC in June: a $3,499 spatial computer with dual micro-OLED displays, an M2 chip plus a dedicated R1 for sensor processing, and Apple-grade hardware all the way through. Then at Meta Connect last week, Meta launched the Quest 3 on Qualcomm’s brand-new Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 for $499. One device is a statement about what XR can be. The other is an argument about what it actually sells.

Two visions, one race
Apple is pitching spatial computing as a personal display, an ambient screen that floats wherever you look, with passthrough so sharp it almost feels real. Meta is pitching mixed reality as something at a seventh of the price, driven by the XR2 Gen 2’s 2.5x GPU jump and support for up to 10 cameras. Alongside all of this, Qualcomm also announced the AR1 Gen 1 chip for smart glasses, which debuts in the Ray-Ban Meta. The chip landscape now cleanly splits: full headsets on XR2, lightweight glasses on AR1.
The trend for the year ahead
Spatial computing is now a legitimate mainstream term because Apple said so. Expect every company to re-examine XR now that Apple is in the room. The price gap between Vision Pro and Quest 3 is the thing that shapes the market: premium versus accessible, with very different user bases.
Apple entering XR is the validation the industry has been waiting for. The Vision Pro is breathtaking hardware at a price almost nobody pays in year one. The Quest 3 on XR2 Gen 2 is the one that actually sells. Snapdragon Insider bias declared: $499 with that GPU is the smarter bet for reaching real people. The competition Apple creates will elevate the whole market, but the unit volume is going somewhere else.
