Thirteen days after Carl Pei confirmed his departure from OnePlus, a new company has appeared in the UK Companies House register. Nothing Technology Limited, incorporated in London on October 29, 2020. The founding team listed: Carl Pei, Akis Evangelidis, David Sanmartín García, Steven Gao, Levi Li. No product. No website. No stated direction beyond a company name that is simultaneously a philosophical statement and a deliberate provocation.

Nothing. When technology is good enough, it should fade into the background. It should feel like nothing at all. That is the implication, anyway. It is also the kind of name that is easy to dismiss, which I suspect is the point. Every joke about a company called Nothing having nothing to show writes the brand into a sentence. I have already read three hot takes this week along the lines of “Carl Pei’s new company is literally nothing.” Every one of them is doing the brand’s marketing for free.

Why London, not Shenzhen

The geographic choice is the first real signal. A consumer electronics company headquartered in London rather than Shenzhen is unusual enough to deserve an explanation. Whatever Nothing builds, it will manufacture in Asia, because every hardware company at scale does. But Pei is locating the design identity, the brand, and the product philosophy in London, not in the supply chain that will execute it.

The working theory: Shenzhen produces excellent hardware at extraordinary scale. It does not produce the kind of brand that earns emotional loyalty from consumers in London, New York, or Berlin. London gives Nothing access to European design talent, an address that reads as premium to Asian consumers who aspire to Western brand cachet, and proximity to the English-speaking media ecosystem that will define global perception of whatever the company announces next. The same logic that made OnePlus relevant in Europe before it was meaningful in China.

The founding team and what it might mean

The co-founders listed include names from Pei’s OnePlus network and the broader Shenzhen hardware ecosystem. Akis Evangelidis and David Sanmartín García in particular have backgrounds in product development and community operations. Nothing is not starting with just a founder and a blank page: it is starting with a team that has experience shipping hardware and managing the community relationships that determine whether hardware brands survive beyond the first product.

Funding details have not been announced yet. The company is incorporated, the team is assembling, and the name is public through the registration filing. That is all we know for certain today. The question of what Nothing is actually building, what it will cost, and when we will be able to buy it remains entirely open. The company could announce a product next week or next year. It could turn out to be consumer electronics, software, services, or something nobody has thought of. Right now it is a name, a philosophy, and a founding team. What it becomes is the story we are all waiting for.
