Some Ray-Ban Meta glasses recorded conversations without the wake phrase, according to user reports this week, and Meta says it’s resolved.
The report that started it came from a Reddit user who saw it on three pairs, second- and third-generation, with the “Respond without Hey Meta” setting switched off. The Meta AI app was saving audio and text transcripts of conversations in the history, and the user says the white light came on while it happened. They also say they first noticed it after a recent firmware update. Meta hasn’t confirmed that.
Android Authority first covered it on Tuesday and couldn’t reproduce it before Meta answered with two sentences: the issue “has been resolved,” and people can manage, review, and delete voice logs in settings. Another outlet asked Meta what caused it and how many devices were hit; as of its write-up, there was no reply, and I haven’t found one since.
So the facts are thin. A handful of reports, a confirmed fix, no cause, no count.
What I keep chewing on is the light. When I wrote about Meta fixing the LED loophole twice, I argued that the indicator is the only thing bystanders have. If the LED lit here, per the user, then it did its job, and the failure sat upstream of it, in whatever decided the glasses should listen at all. That is a worse problem for the wearer than for the person across the table, and the wearer’s own conversation history ended up holding the transcripts.
It also lands in a strange legal moment. Newsom’s veto left California without the first smart glasses recording bill, the bystander class action I covered last month is still adding people who never bought a pair, and Delhi police were reportedly wearing these exact glasses at a protest last Saturday. An accidental recording bug is a gift to anyone arguing the device needs rules, whatever Meta’s firmware notes say.
