MediaTek sells more smartphone chips than anyone on earth, and it has for years. In 2026, it still holds roughly a third of the market, comfortably ahead of Qualcomm, Apple, and Samsung, even after a brutal memory shortage squeezed the entry level where it lives. That statistic used to be the whole story of MediaTek, and these days it might be the least interesting thing about the company. That gap, and MediaTek’s AI turn, is the part I actually want to talk about.

On phones, the flagship fight settled into a rhythm. The Dimensity 9400 arrived in late 2024 on TSMC’s 3nm node with a 50 TOPS AI engine, all big cores again, and a genuinely strong GPU, though its CPU got run down by Qualcomm’s new custom Oryon core. A year later, the Dimensity 9500 moved to Arm’s brand-new C1 cores on the Lumex platform, became the first phone chip to clear four million points on AnTuTu, and fought the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 to something close to a draw, winning on efficiency and price while conceding raw peak. By early 2026, MediaTek had taped out the Dimensity 9600 on 2nm, still riding Arm’s cores instead of building its own. I keep expecting the company to design its own core one of these years, and it keeps declining to, which reads as either complacent or shrewd depending on the week. Either way, it is the same move it has run forever: take Arm’s newest core the day it ships and undercut Qualcomm on the sticker.

Where the real growth went

The phone business is the floor now, not the ceiling, and the interesting money moved on top of it. The satellite is one piece. MediaTek’s MT6825 was the first commercially available 5G IoT-NTN chip, the silicon inside the earliest satellite-messaging phones from Bullitt, Cat, and Motorola, and through 2025, the company kept planting NTN flags, running the world’s first 5G connection over Eutelsat’s OneWeb low-orbit satellites alongside Airbus, then the first 5G-Advanced version of it with the European Space Agency in the room. For a company nobody thinks of as a space player, MediaTek reached standards-based satellite connectivity before almost anyone else. The automotive push and the Kompanio Arm PC chips are real growth, too.

The piece that actually re-rated the company is the data center. The outfit that got rich selling cheap phone chips now co-designs Google’s TPUs, the accelerators that train and serve the large language models everyone suddenly builds their business on, and I still have to reread that sentence every time I write it. Google split that work with Broadcom on purpose and brought MediaTek in as the lower-cost hand, and MediaTek separately co-built NVIDIA’s GB10 Grace Blackwell superchip, the brain of the DGX Spark desktop AI machine. It raised its 2026 data-center ASIC guidance to around two billion dollars off a base that was a rounding error two years earlier, and spent its 2026 Analyst Day telling a room of skeptics that this is not your grandfather’s MediaTek. It is hiring to prove the point, pulling from a talent pool that includes the silicon engineers OPPO cut loose when it killed its own ZEKU chip unit in 2023.

The Qualcomm question, twenty years on

Strip away the model numbers, and the whole MediaTek versus Qualcomm story comes down to one decision they made differently. Qualcomm builds its own CPU cores. MediaTek rents Arm’s. That single split explains most of what you actually feel using their chips.

Qualcomm spent billions on Nuvia and turned it into Oryon, the custom core that debuted in the Snapdragon 8 Elite in late 2024, wresting the CPU crown back after MediaTek’s 2022 and 2023 runs. Custom cores let Qualcomm push single-thread performance higher and hold it under sustained load without cooking the phone, and they let it tune the Adreno GPU and X80 modem to the same silicon. That last part is underrated: the Adreno driver stack is why Qualcomm still owns emulation and heavy mobile gaming, and its modem, the X80 in the 8 Elite and not the laptop-class X Elite the spec sheets sometimes confuse it with, still leads on 5G peak speed and mmWave.

MediaTek went the other way, and it turned out to be a strategy rather than a surrender. Leaning on Arm’s off-the-shelf cores, Cortex-X yesterday and the new C1 Lumex family today, lets it ship Arm’s latest design the instant it exists, spend nothing developing a core, and price the finished chip well under Qualcomm. Its Immortalis and now Mali-G1 GPUs trade blows with Adreno on raw numbers and beat it on efficiency, even while they trail on emulation and driver polish. On connectivity, MediaTek leads Wi-Fi throughput and, as the satellite story already showed, it reached standards-based NTN first.

So the honest 2026 scorecard is narrower than it has ever been. Qualcomm still maintains sustained CPU performance and emulation, keeps the modem lead, and charges you accordingly. MediaTek gives up a little of each for better efficiency and a much lower price, and somewhere in the last two years, that stopped being the compromise you had to apologize for. The old gap is still real; it just stopped deciding much for most buyers. And I don’t think the 2015 version of any of us would have believed the rest: the company that armed the shanzhai counterfeiters now co-designs the chips that train the world’s AI, and the phone crown it chased for twenty years has quietly become the side quest.
